The Trust Signals Every Business Website Needs

Trust is decided before your copy is read

A new visitor runs a fast, quiet audit: does this look like a real business, do other people use them, can I reach them if something goes wrong? Design quality gets you through the first second; evidence gets you through the next thirty. Most small business sites lose the enquiry at the evidence stage.

Real reviews and real work

Genuine Google reviews (with the occasional imperfection — it's more believable, not less), named customers where you have permission, and photos of actual work. These answer 'are they good?' better than any claim you can write. If you're light on reviews, that's fixable — see how to get more Google reviews.

Real contact details, visible

A phone number, an email address, and the name of a person or company — in the header, the footer and the contact page. Businesses that hide behind a form alone look like they're hiding, full stop. An address matters for local trades; a service-area business can say so honestly instead.

Credentials that are checkable

Trade body memberships, qualifications, insurance held, years trading — anything a customer could verify counts double. 'Trusted by thousands' counts for nothing; 'NICEIC registered, verify at niceic.com' counts. The rule is simple: claim only what a sceptical customer could confirm.

The fake signals that backfire

Stock-photo 'teams', invented star ratings, countdown timers that reset, 'as seen in' logos you weren't seen in. Visitors spot these faster than businesses expect, and one fake signal poisons ten real ones. Honest and sparse beats impressive and invented — a principle our web design work is built on.
