Website Copywriting Tips for Small Businesses (No Writer Needed)

Write like you talk to customers

Read your homepage aloud. If you wouldn't say it to a customer standing in front of you, rewrite it. 'We provide bespoke solutions tailored to your needs' becomes 'We build websites that win you work.' Plain words aren't unprofessional — they're clear.

Answer questions in the order customers ask them

Every service page should follow the real conversation: what is it, what does it cost (or what affects the cost), how long does it take, why you, what happens next. If your page answers question four first, visitors leave to find a site that respects their order.

One idea per paragraph, one point per heading

People scan websites; they don't read them like novels. Short paragraphs, headings that say something specific ('Fixed quotes, in writing' beats 'Our promise'), and no sentence working harder than it needs to. Cut every word that earns nothing.

Specifics sell, adjectives don't

'High-quality service' is a claim anyone can type. 'Quotes in writing within two working days' is checkable — and therefore believed. Replace every adjective you can with a fact, a number that's true, or a real example. Honesty converts better than polish.

End every page with a next step

Never let a page just stop. Tell the reader what to do: call, email, request a quote. If writing the words feels like the hard part, it's also the part a good web design partner can draft with you — you know your business, they know how it should read online.
