Why Your Website Isn't Showing on Google

First: is it indexed at all?

Search Google for site:yourdomain.co.uk (no spaces). If nothing appears, Google hasn't indexed your site — a different problem from ranking poorly. Check Google Search Console's coverage reports next; they tell you exactly what Google can and can't see. If you haven't set Search Console up, that's your first job.

New sites take time

A brand-new domain usually takes days to weeks to be discovered and indexed, and longer to rank for anything competitive. That's normal, not a failure. Submitting your sitemap in Search Console speeds up discovery, but nobody can honestly promise instant rankings.

Accidental blocks

A single line — a noindex tag or a disallow rule in robots.txt — tells Google to ignore your whole site. These often survive from a staging version or a plugin setting. If your site was recently rebuilt or relaunched, check this first; it's a two-minute fix that's invisible to visitors.

Thin or unfocused content

Google ranks pages that clearly answer a search. A homepage that says 'welcome to our website' answers nothing. Each important page should target a real search — 'boiler repair in Luton' beats 'our services' every time. This is the core of what SEO work actually involves.

Technical problems

Slow loading, broken mobile layouts and crawl errors all suppress visibility. Google has limited patience with sites that waste its time or frustrate visitors. A technical SEO review finds these systematically.

What to do, in order

One: verify Search Console and submit your sitemap. Two: remove any indexing blocks. Three: give every important page a clear, unique title that matches a real search. Four: build useful content around your services. Five: earn mentions and reviews. In that order — the glamorous stuff never works until the boring stuff is done.
